About

Bilu Liu is a leading researcher in the fields of two-dimensional (2D) materials, soft matter optics, and advanced hydrogels. His most notable contribution is the development of a 2D material–based transparent hydrogel with engineerable interference colours, published in 2022 and already garnering 97 citations. This work introduces large, tunable optical anisotropy into transparent hydrogels, enabling birefringence-based functions that were previously unattainable. By integrating 2D materials into the hydrogel matrix, Liu’s team created a platform that can produce vivid, controllable interference colours without compromising transparency—a breakthrough with direct implications for contact lenses, imperceptible soft robotics, and invisible wearable devices. The ability to engineer these optical properties on demand opens new avenues for smart, responsive materials that can sense and display information. Liu’s research bridges fundamental materials science and practical device engineering, making him a rising figure in the development of next-generation soft optoelectronic and biomedical systems. His work is widely recognized for its creativity and potential to transform industries reliant on transparent, functional materials.
