About
Anjana Bhat is a leading researcher at the intersection of motor development, social communication, and technology-based interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Her work fundamentally explores how embodied, rhythmic, and robotic interactions can enhance motor, social, and communication skills in this population. In a landmark pilot randomized controlled trial, Bhat demonstrated that rhythm and robotic interventions significantly improve imitation, praxis, and interpersonal synchrony in children with ASD (111 citations). She further showed these interventions reduce repetitive behaviors while improving affective states (92 citations) and enhance both spontaneous and responsive verbal communication (91 citations) and social attention patterns (76 citations). Her preliminary studies established that robot-child interaction protocols can effectively engage children in whole-body movements and improve bilateral coordination. Through her innovative use of interactive technologies and rhythmic engagement, Bhat has pioneered new therapeutic pathways that leverage the body's natural affinity for rhythm and social robots, providing evidence-based alternatives to standard-of-care interventions. Her work has profound implications for how clinicians and educators design movement-based interventions to support the holistic development of children with ASD.
