Abstract
Drone forensics is a branch of digital forensics that focuses on finding, capturing, preserving, reconstructing, analyzing, and recording drone occurrences. Due to their effective information gathering and processing capacities as well as their highly developed surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), often known as drones, have become more and more popular. Drones are used for a variety of purposes, including transporting, entertaining drones, photographing, writing drones, storm tracking and forecasting hurricanes and tornadoes, building safety inspections, and a lot more with the help of artificial intelligence, assisting people, and making our lives easier. Drones’ capacity to reach the most remote regions with little to no human labor, maximum efficiency, and constrained time is one of the most compelling reasons why they are being accepted internationally, particularly in these four sectors: commercial, personal, military, and future technology. Generation 7 of UAVs is already in development, with 3D Robotics announcing the launch of SOLO, the first all-in-one smart drone in the world. The National Guard, supply chain, and commercial services will all benefit from the next major advancement in drone technology – smart drones with built-in safety and compliance technologies, high-precision sensors, and self-monitoring. Drones are indeed remarkable and valuable technological advancements. However, on the flip side, they can be abused by criminals, which raises concerns about their effectiveness. Almost all nations are currently developing drones for a variety of uses. There are still several provisions that could be improved, and many experts are always working on them. In this chapter, we will dive into several types of drones; how effective they are in forensic investigation; and the applications, techniques, and advancements implemented in drone forensics. We will see how drones have the capacity to store a broad range of evidence that might be immensely useful to forensics investigations.
