Abstract

Biosensors are used for the identification of an analyte in a biological system with a detector. The amalgamation of biosensors with drug delivery systems is the latest trend, leading to improved treatment plans for diseases and better patient compliance. Biosensing-drug delivery systems like hydrogels, nanoparticles, electrospun fibers (stimuli-responsive materials), wearable bioMEMS, and microfabricated devices have significant impact on treatment, diagnosis, and prognosis. Novel approaches such as integrating delivery devices with smartphones for continuous monitoring of medication and recording physiological response in diseases like diabetes and epilepsy are gaining popularity. Despite the progress made, numerous hurdles remain to be overcome in order for these systems to achieve their full potential. This chapter focuses on the various biosensors used in various drug delivery, role of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), bioMEMS, biomechanical devices, robotics, and transplants for various biomedical applications.
