Abstract

In the 1940s Norbert Wiener coined the term cybernetics to describe the combined subjects of control and communications in man and machines. Since the emergence of cybernetics, general systems research and cybernetics have developed side by side. In the 1980s, the search for new paradigms to solve problems in robotics and computer vision stimulated research in neural networks and resulted in renewed interest in the subject of cybernetics. Integrated information systems using advanced technologies are proving successful in industries, including the metal-processing industry. The technologies used in such integrated information systems are enhanced by alternative techniques which are significantly improving the capabilities of existing systems. This paper presents one of the alternative control techniques—the LMI technique. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
