Abstract
The “auto” in automobile might soon be short for “autonomous.” Research in both civilian and defense laboratories is applying robotic vision and control systems to cars, trucks, and military vehicles. Civilian research aims to protect the driver and any passengers. Military researchers, however, seek to reduce the number of soldiers in an armored brigade or special operations (reconnaissance) unit.
