In biology, a **sequence** refers to the ordered arrangement of nucleotides in DNA or RNA, or amino acids in a protein — essentially the informational blueprint encoded in living systems. In robotics and AI, biological sequences inspire and directly enable several cutting-edge technologies. DNA sequences, for example, are programmed to direct the shape change of soft robotic materials (such as hydrogels), guide molecular robots through prescriptive chemical landscapes, and perform computational operations through DNA-based logic. Beyond literal biology, the concept of sequential ordering permeates robotics more broadly: robots must execute ordered action sequences for task planning, follow temporal sequences of sensory observations for navigation and SLAM, and process time-series data for motion prediction and control. Biological sequence analysis techniques, such as dynamic time warping, also inform how robots compare and recognize temporal patterns in sensor data. Understanding biological sequences matters because they offer a substrate for ultra-miniaturized, energy-efficient computation and actuation — opening pathways toward programmable matter, nano-scale robots, and bio-integrated systems that conventional rigid-body machines cannot achieve.
