Enzyme assay is a biochemical measurement technique used to quantify the activity, concentration, or kinetic properties of enzymes by monitoring the rate at which they catalyze specific chemical reactions. In robotics and AI contexts, enzyme assays are most prominently used in automated high-throughput screening platforms, where robotic liquid-handling systems execute hundreds or thousands of parallel assays with minimal human intervention. These platforms measure enzymatic activity through colorimetric, fluorometric, polarimetric, or turbidity-based detection methods, enabling rapid characterization of enzyme variants, inhibitors, or metabolic states across large sample sets. Robotic automation improves reproducibility, reduces sample volumes to the microliter scale, and dramatically increases throughput compared to manual methods. In plant biology, for example, robot-based assay platforms have profiled dozens of metabolic enzymes simultaneously across diurnal cycles or genetic mapping populations. Enzyme assays matter to the AI and robotics community because they represent a core workflow where automation, sensor integration, and data-driven analysis converge, enabling accelerating discoveries in metabolic engineering, drug development, and industrial biotechnology.
