About
A channel, in the context of robotics and AI communications, refers to the physical or logical medium through which signals, data, or information are transmitted between devices, systems, or agents. Channels can be wired or wireless, encompassing radio frequencies, acoustic pathways, optical links, or biological signal pathways such as EEG and EMG electrode recordings. In robotics and AI, channels are fundamental to enabling teleoperation, multi-robot coordination, sensor fusion, brain-computer interfaces, and IoT connectivity — governing how reliably and efficiently information flows between components. For example, wireless communication channels support UAV relay networks and industrial IoT systems, while signal channels in neural interfaces carry motor imagery data for prosthetic control. Channel quality directly affects latency, noise, and bandwidth — all critical factors in time-sensitive applications like bilateral teleoperation and real-time control. Understanding and optimizing channel characteristics, whether through channel modeling, pruning in neural networks, or filtering in biosignal processing, is essential for building robust, responsive, and scalable robotic and AI systems across diverse environments.
