Yves Govaerts is a leading figure in satellite aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced how we quantify and communicate uncertainty in Earth observation data. His primary research focuses on the retrieval of aerosol optical depth (AOD) from spaceborne sensors and, crucially, on developing rigorous frameworks for evaluating the reliability of these retrievals. Govaerts’s most impactful contribution is his pioneering review and framework for assessing pixel-level uncertainty estimates in satellite aerosol products.
