About
Wenheng Liu is a pioneer in micro-robotics and MEMS-based precision assembly systems. His research focuses on developing programmable, array-based manipulation platforms that can precisely move, lift, and orient miniature components without physical contact or complex grippers. Liu’s most influential contribution is the micromachined permalloy magnetic actuator array, which enables controlled, parallel manipulation of silicon and glass chips for micro-robotics assembly—a concept that has garnered 66 citations. He also introduced the groundbreaking idea of the "intelligent motion surface" (IMS), a dense, programmable array of micro-manipulators that function as a reconfigurable, automated workbench for parts handling. This work, first simulated in MEMS technology in 1994 and later expanded in 2002, laid the foundation for distributed micro-robotic systems capable of precise, scalable assembly. With a total of over 110 citations across his key papers, Liu’s innovations bridge MEMS fabrication, magnetic actuation, and programmable automation, offering a compelling vision for future micro-factories and self-assembling systems. His research remains essential reading for engineers exploring contactless, high-precision manipulation at the microscale.
