About

Taolin Sun is a leading researcher in the design and engineering of advanced hydrogels, with a primary focus on overcoming the inherent trade-offs between mechanical robustness, adhesion, and permeability. Sun’s major contributions lie in developing novel strategies to create high-performance synthetic hydrogels. In a highly cited 2021 work (173 citations), Sun introduced a method to modify hydrophobic hydrogels into strongly adhesive and tough materials using electrostatic interactions, achieving excellent mechanical performance and anti-swelling properties in saltwater—a critical advance for applications in soft robotics, 3D printing, and wearable sensors. Building on this, Sun’s 2022 study pioneered phase-separation-induced porous hydrogels from amphiphilic triblock copolymers, successfully breaking the traditional compromise between high mechanical strength and high permeability. This work opens new avenues for energy storage, solar vapor generation, and tissue engineering. Through these innovations, Sun has established a reputation for creating multifunctional hydrogels that push the boundaries of material performance, making them viable for demanding real-world environments.
