Dr. Stella Chin‐Shaw Tsai is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose research focuses on the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oral cancers, particularly in the challenging context of trismus—a condition of restricted mouth opening common among Taiwanese betel quid chewers. Her major contributions include demonstrating that TORS is both feasible and effective for oral tongue cancer patients with trismus, achieving negative margins in 98.5% of cases without compromising oncologic outcomes. Her 2024 study, cited 7 times, was the first to evaluate TORS outcomes in trismus patients, showing that the condition does not adversely affect surgical or functional results.
