Dr. Shishan Xue is a leading materials scientist whose pioneering work in hydrogel engineering is reshaping the fields of soft robotics, wearable electronics, and biomimetic materials. Her research centers on designing multifunctional hydrogels that integrate exceptional mechanical properties with advanced stimuli-responsive behaviors. Dr. Xue's most impactful contribution is the development of a glycerol–water hydrogel that mimics human skin, featuring self-healing ability, high sensitivity, and strong adhesiveness across a wide temperature range—a breakthrough cited over 114 times and critical for next-generation wearable devices. She has further advanced the field by reinforcing poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels with functionalized basalt fibers to achieve toughness, high stretchability, and self-healing, as well as by creating thermoresponsive hydrogels enabled by boron nitride nanosheets that combine high swellability with stretchability. These innovations address fundamental challenges in creating durable, adaptive soft materials.
