About
Qais Al‐Awqati is a pioneering figure in epithelial biology and renal physiology, best known for uncovering the molecular mechanisms that govern epithelial cell differentiation and ion transport. His research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of how cells in the kidney and other epithelia acquire specialized functions, particularly through the role of extracellular matrix proteins. A landmark contribution is his work on Hensin, a rabbit ortholog of DMBT1, which he showed is a multifunctional protein implicated in epithelial differentiation, innate immunity, and tumorigenesis. In his highly cited 2008 study, Al‐Awqati demonstrated that secreted Cyclophilin A, a peptidylprolyl cis-trans isomerase, mediates the assembly of Hensin into the extracellular matrix, where it induces the morphological changes characteristic of terminal differentiation. This discovery provided a critical link between matrix remodeling and cell fate decisions. With over 39 citations on this key paper alone, his work has had a lasting impact on the fields of developmental biology and renal medicine, offering insights that bridge basic epithelial biology with clinical conditions such as kidney disease and cancer.
