About

Paolo Ruscito is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work centers on advancing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for complex aerodigestive tract conditions. His primary research focuses on minimally invasive robotic approaches to tongue base tumors, ectopic thyroid tissue, and rare lymphoproliferative disorders. Ruscito’s landmark 2013 prospective cohort study on TORS for tongue base tumors (51 citations) established the technique as a viable alternative to traditional open surgery, demonstrating improved functional and aesthetic outcomes without compromising oncologic survival. He further innovated by reporting the first-ever TORS resection of an ectopic lingual goiter (17 citations), a procedure that previously required morbid external approaches. His most recent work applies TORS to Castleman’s disease, showcasing the expanding versatility of robotic surgery for rare Waldeyer’s ring pathologies. With cumulative citations exceeding 70, Ruscito’s contributions have helped redefine the standard of care for select pharyngeal and laryngeal tumors, reducing surgical morbidity while maintaining oncologic rigor. His ongoing work continues to push the boundaries of what is achievable through the da Vinci robotic platform.
