N. Tanaka is a pioneering figure in construction robotics, best known for advancing automated systems for concrete slab finishing. His seminal work, "The Development of the 'Mark II' Mobile Robot for Concrete Slab Finishing" (1986), co-authored with Saito, Arai, Banno, Ochi, and Kikuchi, introduced one of the earliest mobile robots designed to automate the physically demanding task of direct concrete finishing. This paper, presented at the 3rd ISARC in Marseille, laid foundational concepts for integrating robotics into on-site construction processes, addressing labor intensity and quality control.
