About

Michael Friedman is a pioneering surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). His primary research focus is the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for OSA, a field he helped establish. Friedman’s landmark 2012 paper, "Transoral Robotic Glossectomy for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea‐Hypopnea Syndrome," with 145 citations, demonstrated the feasibility of performing a robotic partial glossectomy without the need for a routine tracheotomy—a major advancement that dramatically reduced patient morbidity. This work laid the foundation for a less invasive, more effective surgical approach. His subsequent studies have continued to explore the broader health impacts of TORS-OSA surgery, including its effects on cardiovascular risk factors like homocysteine levels and its surprising benefits on lower urinary tract symptoms and nocturia in male patients.
