Mar Cortes is a prominent rehabilitation neuroscientist whose work sits at the intersection of robotic-assisted therapy, noninvasive brain stimulation, and neurological recovery. Her research has principally advanced our understanding of how technology-driven interventions can restore motor function in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and stroke. Cortes has made foundational contributions through rigorous clinical trials examining exoskeleton-based gait training, most notably the landmark WISE trial (2022, 73 citations), which demonstrated meaningful improvements in walking speed among community-dwelling individuals with incomplete SCI.
