About

Dr. Luca Pio is a pioneering pediatric surgeon whose work centers on advancing robotic surgery for children, with a particular focus on pediatric oncology and urology. His major contributions lie in demonstrating the feasibility, safety, and benefits of robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques for complex procedures in young patients. Notably, his landmark study on the first 100 robotic tumor resections in children (52 citations) provided crucial nationwide evidence that robotic surgery can be effectively and safely applied in pediatric oncology. Dr. Pio also led the first prospective study on robotic management of renal tumors in children (57 citations), establishing a new standard for minimally invasive treatment of Wilms tumors. Beyond oncology, he has innovated in pediatric urology, showing promising results for robotic pyeloplasty via a retroperitoneal approach (23 citations), and in pediatric colorectal surgery, refining the robotic Soave procedure for older children with Hirschsprung disease (26 citations). His systematic review of the learning curve for pediatric robotic surgery (33 citations) has been instrumental in shaping training and fellowship programs. With over 200 total citations, Dr. Pio’s work is not only technically groundbreaking but also directly improves outcomes for some of the most vulnerable patients.
