About
Luca Ferraro is a leading figure in the advancement of robotic general surgery, with a focused expertise in minimally invasive approaches to complex abdominal wall reconstruction and colorectal procedures. His major contributions center on demonstrating the feasibility, safety, and comparative advantages of robotic platforms over traditional laparoscopic techniques for challenging operations. Notably, his multicenter study comparing robotic versus laparoscopic TAPP for bilateral hernia repair (29 citations) provides critical evidence for surgical decision-making. Ferraro has also pioneered techniques in robotic right colectomy with complete mesocolic excision, showing that both senior and junior surgeons can achieve excellent short-term outcomes (23 citations). His work extends to robotic rectal prolapse treatment, total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, and elective colectomy for diverticular disease. A testament to his innovative impact, Ferraro published the first report of robotic retromuscular incisional hernia repair using the Hugo RAS™ system (2024). With over 100 cumulative citations across his most influential papers, Ferraro is actively shaping the next generation of minimally invasive surgery, proving that robotic technology can improve patient outcomes while shortening the learning curve for complex procedures.
