About

Kimberley Warren‐Rhodes is a pioneering astrobiologist whose work bridges the extremes of Earth and the search for life on Mars. Her research focuses on microbial ecology in hyperarid environments, planetary protection, and the detection of biosignatures—key areas for understanding life’s limits and potential beyond our planet. She is best known for leading the Atacama Rover Astrobiology Drilling Studies (ARADS) project, which field-tested autonomous drilling and contamination control strategies for future Mars life-detection missions, such as Icebreaker. Her 2023 study on “Salt Constructs in Paleo-Lake Basins” (12 citations) identified micro-climates called “refugia” in Mars-like environments, showing how microbial life persists in centimeter-scale pockets of habitability.
