Kequan Yu is a leading researcher at the forefront of digital construction and advanced cementitious materials. His work centers on the development and 3D printing of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC), also known as Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC)—a class of ultra-ductile, self-reinforced concrete. Yu’s major contribution lies in solving a critical bottleneck in 3D concrete printing: the need for steel reinforcement. His highly cited 2021 paper, "3D-printable engineered cementitious composites (3DP-ECC)," (211 citations) demonstrated that ECC can be formulated for 3D printing, effectively creating a ductile, self-reinforcing material that eliminates the need for manual rebar placement.
