About
K. Krishna Moorthy is a distinguished atmospheric scientist whose pioneering research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of aerosol-climate interactions over the South Asian region. His work centers on three interconnected pillars: the characterization of maritime aerosols, the simulation of aerosol impacts on regional climate, and the quantification of aerosol radiative effects. Moorthy’s most impactful contribution is his leadership in developing the Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) as a component of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), a landmark achievement detailed in his highly cited 2009 paper (379 citations). This work established a globally recognized framework for ship-based aerosol monitoring, providing critical data for climate models. He further demonstrated the power of regional climate modeling by simulating South Asian aerosols using the RegCM4 model (135 citations), offering key insights into the region’s complex aerosol burden. More recently, under the SWAAMI campaign, Moorthy has led efforts to enhance the accuracy of regional aerosol radiative effect estimates, improving the quality of extinction and absorption data over the Indian subcontinent. Through these contributions, he has become a central figure in Indian aerosol science, shaping both observational networks and modeling approaches that underpin climate impact assessments.
