About
Dr. Junyu Wang is a pioneering researcher in neurorehabilitation and spinal cord injury (SCI), with a focus on the intersection of robotics, gut physiology, and the brain–gut axis. In a landmark 2024 pilot study, Dr. Wang demonstrated that exoskeleton-assisted walking (EAW) can significantly improve bowel function in individuals with motor-complete SCI—a finding that addresses one of the most debilitating secondary complications of paralysis. By investigating the underlying mechanisms, Dr. Wang’s work revealed that EAW may modulate intestinal flora and restore brain–gut communication, offering a non-invasive, technology-driven therapeutic pathway. Although early in its citation trajectory (5 citations), this study has already garnered attention for its translational potential, bridging robotic rehabilitation with systemic physiological benefits. Dr. Wang’s contributions are reshaping how we understand the rehabilitative impact of exoskeletons, moving beyond mobility to encompass visceral health. Their research holds promise for improving quality of life in SCI populations and opens new avenues for exploring robot-assisted therapies in neurogastroenterology.
