Juan Carlos Antuña is a leading figure in atmospheric aerosol research, with a particular focus on volcanic plume characterization and the validation of remote sensing instrumentation. His work is central to understanding how major volcanic events, such as the 2015 Calbuco eruption in Chile, impact air quality and aviation safety. In his most cited study (42 citations), Antuña led a synergetic analysis of the aerosol layers injected into the stratosphere, demonstrating how ground-based lidar and sun photometer networks can be combined to track hazardous pyroclastic material. Beyond volcanic hazards, Antuña has made foundational contributions to aerosol monitoring in the Caribbean, establishing the first sun photometer measurements at Camagüey, Cuba, as part of the AERONET and RIMA networks. His more recent work (2022) provides a critical cross-validation of integrated water vapor retrievals from CIMEL sun photometers and GNSS stations across southwestern Europe, achieving correlation coefficients above 0.91.
