John A. Sidles is a pioneering figure at the intersection of quantum information science and orthopaedic surgery, whose career defies disciplinary boundaries. He is best known for introducing the concept of "robotic assistance" in orthopaedic surgery with his seminal 1993 proof-of-principle study on distal femoral arthroplasty (64 citations), which laid the groundwork for modern computer-assisted surgical navigation. However, Sidles’ most profound contributions lie in quantum mechanics: he proposed the radical idea of using magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) to achieve single-spin detection, a vision that later enabled the first direct imaging of a single electron spin. His theoretical work on quantum computing with mechanical resonators has been highly influential, and he developed the "Sidles–Gisin" theorem on quantum state estimation.
