About

Jianhong Zhao is a materials scientist whose pioneering work on gallium-based liquid metals has opened a vibrant new frontier in functional materials. Her research focuses on engineering the optical and structural properties of liquid metals, specifically addressing their inherent limitation of a monochromatic silver-white appearance. Zhao’s major contributions center on the development of novel core–shell structures that unlock unique surface fluorescence. In her highly cited 2022 paper, she introduced a thermal oxidation processing method to create these structures, demonstrating a breakthrough strategy that imbues liquid metals with vivid, tunable fluorescence. This work, garnering 25 citations, was followed by a complementary study proposing a new framework using liquid metals and metal halides, which achieved exceptional fluorescence properties and received 20 citations. By transforming liquid metals from purely functional to aesthetically and optically versatile materials, Zhao’s innovations hold significant promise for applications in advanced displays, sensors, and anti-counterfeiting technologies.
