About
J. Greiner is a pioneering astrophysicist whose work centers on the optical and near-infrared follow-up of high-energy transients, including gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and gravitational-wave sources. A key contribution is the development and use of the GROND (Gamma-Ray Burst Optical and Near-infrared Detector) instrument, which enables rapid, multi-band observations crucial for determining the redshifts of GRB afterglows. Greiner’s impact is demonstrated through highly cited studies, such as the 1999 paper on the decay of GRB 990123’s optical afterglow (112 citations), which provided critical tests of the fireball model. More recently, Greiner led the MASTER optical follow-up of the first gravitational-wave event, GW150914 (46 citations), marking a milestone in multi-messenger astronomy.
