About
Igor Veselovskii is a leading atmospheric physicist whose research focuses on the remote sensing of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, with particular emphasis on mineral dust, wildfire smoke, and volcanic particles. His most significant contribution came in 2018 when he documented extreme levels of Canadian wildfire smoke in the stratosphere over central Europe, observing light extinction coefficients of 500 Mm⁻¹—approximately 20 times higher than those recorded after the 1991 Pinatubo eruptions. This landmark study, which has garnered 190 citations, fundamentally reshaped understanding of wildfire impacts on the stratosphere. Veselovskii pioneered the inversion of multiwavelength Raman/polarization lidar data to retrieve vertical profiles of pure dust and mixed smoke-dust plumes, work that has accumulated over 80 citations. He has also advanced comparative studies of aerosol retrieval algorithms, including GARRLiC and LIRIC, and validated remote sensing techniques against aircraft in situ measurements during Saharan dust events. His research on aged volcanic particles from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption and aerosol hygroscopic growth effects has further demonstrated his versatility. Through his development of sophisticated lidar inversion methodologies, Veselovskii has provided the atmospheric science community with critical tools for understanding aerosol transport, composition, and radiative forcing.
