About
Giuseppe Marulli is a pioneering thoracic surgeon whose career has been defined by his groundbreaking contributions to robotic and minimally invasive surgery for thymic diseases. His research has fundamentally shaped the adoption of robotic-assisted thymectomy as a viable alternative to traditional open approaches, particularly for patients with myasthenia gravis and early-stage thymoma. Marulli's most influential work, an early report on 33 patients treated with the da Vinci robotic system for myasthenia gravis (2006, 162 citations), helped establish robotic thymectomy as technically safe and reproducible. He subsequently led and contributed to landmark multicenter European studies that collectively demonstrated the oncological efficacy and surgical advantages of robotic thymectomy across hundreds of patients, with his 2012 and 2013 papers alone accumulating over 250 citations. His 2018 propensity score-matching study further strengthened the evidence base by directly comparing robotic and open transsternal approaches. Through large national and international collaborative studies spanning nearly two decades, Marulli has helped generate the long-term outcome data necessary to resolve persistent controversies around minimally invasive thymic surgery.
