About
George Melich is a colorectal surgeon and pioneer in minimally invasive surgical techniques, with a research focus centered on robotic and laparoscopic approaches to rectal cancer surgery. His most influential work, cited over 113 times, demonstrated that robotic surgery offers a faster learning curve than laparoscopy for novice surgeons performing rectal cancer operations — a landmark finding that has helped shape surgical training paradigms worldwide. His subsequent research on robotic total mesorectal excision, accumulating over 55 citations, provided critical oncologic and clinicopathologic outcome data validating the safety and efficacy of the robotic platform for rectal cancer patients, including those with obesity. Melich has also made meaningful contributions to surgical technique innovation, describing robotic single-incision resections and a novel site-adjusted levator transection for eccentrically located tumors. Recognizing the ethical challenges of surgical training, he developed and validated a rectal dissection simulator for the da Vinci robotic system, advancing the field of surgical education. Across his body of work, Melich has consistently championed the integration of robotic technology into colorectal surgery, improving both patient outcomes and the structured development of the next generation of minimally invasive surgeons.
