About
Gaurav Datir is an instrumentation scientist whose work is central to advancing adaptive optics (AO) for ground-based astronomy. His primary research focuses on the design, development, and deployment of cost-effective, robotic AO systems that dramatically sharpen astronomical images. Datir’s major contribution is his role in the development of Robo-AO, the first fully robotic, autonomous, laser-guided AO system to operate on the sky. This system represents a paradigm shift, making high-resolution imaging economically viable for 1- to 3-meter class telescopes, which are far more numerous than their larger counterparts.
