F. Gianotti is a leading figure in high-energy astrophysics, specializing in the study of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the development of advanced instrumentation for gamma-ray astronomy. Their most impactful work includes the landmark 2010 study of the 2009 December gamma-ray flare of the blazar 3C 454.3, which became the brightest gamma-ray source in the sky at that time. This multifrequency campaign, cited 58 times, provided critical insights into the extreme emission mechanisms of blazars and their relativistic jets. Gianotti has also made significant contributions to the engineering of next-generation telescopes, notably through their work on the ASTRI SST-2M prototype for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).
