About
Donghyun Jin is a leading figure in satellite remote sensing and land surface radiation, whose work has been instrumental in advancing Korea’s meteorological satellite capabilities. His primary research focuses on developing algorithms for geostationary satellite instruments, particularly the Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) aboard the Geo-KOMPSAT-2A (GK-2A) satellite. Jin’s most cited work, “Development of Land Surface Albedo Algorithm for the GK-2A/AMI Instrument” (2020, 18 citations), addresses the critical challenge of deriving high-resolution land surface albedo from next-generation geostationary platforms. This algorithm enables the retrieval of surface properties at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 0.5–2 km, a significant leap from previous sensors. By leveraging the GK-2A’s enhanced capabilities—launched in December 2018—Jin’s contributions directly support climate monitoring, energy budget studies, and environmental applications. His work exemplifies the synergy between satellite engineering and atmospheric science, providing a foundation for improved weather prediction and land-surface interaction models. As a researcher at the Korea Meteorological Administration, Jin continues to shape the operational use of satellite data, bridging the gap between instrument design and practical geophysical retrieval.
