David L. Des Marais is a pioneering astrobiologist and geochemist whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of life’s potential beyond Earth. His research focuses on the co-evolution of life and planetary environments, particularly through the study of microbial ecosystems in extreme habitats, such as hot springs and hypersaline lakes, which serve as analogs for early Earth and Mars.
