About
Cunzheng Song is a materials scientist whose research centers on the design and engineering of advanced, stimuli-responsive hydrogels derived from natural polysaccharides. His major contributions lie in creating sustainable, high-performance soft materials that integrate multiple functionalities. In his highly cited 2019 work (58 citations), Song pioneered the development of locust bean gum/gellan gum double-network hydrogels. By cleverly combining pH-sensitive borate-ester bonds in the LBG network with hydrogen-bonded double-helix bundles in the Gg network, he achieved a material with superior self-healing capabilities and unprecedented pH-driven shape-memory properties. This work not only demonstrated a novel strategy for using two natural polymers to create robust, dynamic networks but also opened new avenues for smart biomaterials in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and soft robotics. Song’s research is distinguished by its focus on green chemistry and bio-inspired design, establishing him as a leading voice in the field of intelligent, eco-friendly hydrogels.
