Chanan S. Syan’s research career bridges the mechanical and the human-centered, with a primary focus on advanced manufacturing, robotics, and assistive technologies. His most influential work, the 2016 volume *CAD/CAM, Robotics and Factories of the Future* (37 citations), establishes him as a key contributor to the evolution of automated production systems. Syan is perhaps best known for his pioneering human-factors study, “Teach pendants: how are they for you?” (1995, 16 citations), a landmark survey that critically examined the ergonomics and usability of robot programming interfaces. This work provided early, data-driven insights into how industrial robots are actually programmed and the difficulties operators face, influencing subsequent interface design.
