About

Bernd Bodenmiller is a pioneer in the field of spatial biology and high-dimensional tissue imaging. His research focuses on developing and applying cutting-edge technologies—most notably imaging mass cytometry (IMC)—to decode the complex cellular architecture of the tumor microenvironment. As a leader of the IMMUcan consortium, Bodenmiller drives large-scale, multi-modal imaging studies that integrate proteomic and transcriptomic data from thousands of cancer patients, enabling unprecedented insights into how immune cells, stroma, and tumor cells interact. His recent work on multi-modal image analysis for large-scale cancer tissue studies (2025) provides a critical framework for standardizing and scaling these complex analyses. While his most cited foundational work on IMC has garnered thousands of citations, his current impact lies in translating these technologies into clinically relevant, high-throughput platforms. Bodenmiller’s contributions are reshaping our understanding of cancer immunology and paving the way for more precise, spatially informed diagnostics and therapies.
