Dr. B. Schmid is a leading figure in aerosol remote sensing, whose career has been defined by pioneering the use of airborne and satellite instruments to characterize atmospheric particles. His research focuses on developing and validating advanced retrieval algorithms for aerosol optical depth (AOD) and properties, bridging the gap between suborbital measurements and space-based observations. A major contribution is his work on polarimetric remote sensing, where he demonstrated a novel method to retrieve aerosol properties over land by using long-wavelength polarization measurements to correct for surface effects (187 citations).
