About
Alexander Stott is a planetary seismologist whose research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the interior structure and surface environment of Mars. As a key contributor to NASA’s InSight mission, Stott has been instrumental in analyzing data from the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument, the first seismometer deployed on Mars since the Viking landers. His most cited work, the 2019 paper detailing SEIS’s design and deployment (375 citations), provides the foundational framework for interpreting Martian seismic signals. Stott’s subsequent research has focused on characterizing the Martian regolith’s response to short-period vibrations, including the effects of lander-induced tilt and local noise sources—critical for distinguishing genuine marsquakes from environmental artifacts.
