About
Robotics is the interdisciplinary field concerned with the design, construction, programming, and operation of machines—robots—capable of performing tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously in the physical world. Drawing on mechanical engineering, control theory, computer science, and artificial intelligence, robotics encompasses a wide spectrum of challenges: modeling rigid-body kinematics and dynamics, planning collision-free motion through complex environments, perceiving surroundings through cameras and sensors, and learning adaptive behaviors through reinforcement learning and deep neural networks. Modern robotics addresses applications ranging from industrial automation and autonomous driving to aerial vehicles, soft robots, and socially interactive systems. Key enabling technologies include simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), probabilistic state estimation, visual servoing, and 3D perception using point clouds. Robotics matters because it extends human capability into dangerous, repetitive, or precision-critical domains, reshapes labor markets and manufacturing, and serves as a living testbed where algorithms must confront the messy uncertainty of the real world—driving advances across AI, sensing, and computation more broadly.
