About
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is a mobile network technology that improves upon the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard by increasing data transmission speeds. It achieves this by using a more efficient radio modulation scheme — 8-Phase Shift Keying (8-PSK) — enabling data rates of up to approximately 384 kbps, roughly three times faster than standard GSM connections. EDGE is considered a 2.75G technology, bridging the gap between second and third generation (3G) wireless networks. In robotics and AI applications, EDGE connectivity provides a reliable, widely available wireless communication channel for transmitting sensor data, telemetry, and control signals between robots and remote systems, particularly in environments lacking more advanced network infrastructure. It supports Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and lightweight edge computing tasks where low-bandwidth, low-power communication is sufficient. EDGE matters because it extends connectivity to regions where 4G or 5G networks are unavailable, ensuring robots and automated systems can maintain communication links in rural, industrial, or developing-world deployments. While largely superseded by newer standards, its broad legacy coverage makes it a practical fallback communication layer for robust, globally deployable robotic and IoT systems.
