Data mining is the computational process of discovering patterns, correlations, and actionable insights from large datasets by applying statistical analysis, machine learning, and database techniques. It encompasses methods such as clustering, classification, regression, and anomaly detection to extract hidden structure from raw information. In robotics and AI, data mining plays a foundational role across numerous applications. Robots use clustering algorithms to segment sensor data—such as 3D point clouds—into meaningful objects and environments. Pattern discovery supports semantic SLAM, where probabilistic associations between observations and landmarks are inferred from accumulated data. In manufacturing and precision agriculture, data mining enables predictive modeling and process optimization by uncovering trends across large operational datasets. Swarm robotics leverages mined behavioral patterns to coordinate collective actions, while multisensor fusion systems mine time-series streams to detect changepoints and maintain consistent state estimates. Data mining matters because modern robotic and AI systems generate enormous volumes of heterogeneous data that cannot be interpreted manually. By automating knowledge extraction, data mining transforms raw sensor readings, logs, and environmental measurements into structured representations that drive planning, perception, and decision-making—ultimately enabling robots to operate intelligently in complex, real-world settings.
