Absorbable sutures are surgical threading materials designed to be broken down and absorbed by the body's natural biological processes over time, eliminating the need for manual removal after a wound heals. Composed of materials such as polyglycolic acid, polyglactin, or natural collagen, they degrade through hydrolysis or enzymatic activity over periods ranging from days to several months, depending on the material composition. In robotic and minimally invasive surgery, absorbable sutures are commonly used for internal tissue approximation, mesh fixation, and organ stabilization during procedures such as robotic sacrocolpopexy, myomectomy, and endoscopic vesicostomy. Their ability to provide temporary structural support while the body heals reduces the risk of long-term foreign body reactions and eliminates secondary removal procedures. For robotics engineers and surgeons developing automated or robot-assisted suturing systems, understanding absorbable suture properties is critical, as material behavior directly influences task planning, tension control, and the design of end-effectors capable of handling biologically interactive materials safely and effectively.
