Nobuyuki Miura is a pioneering researcher in location-based information retrieval and mobile computing. His work laid foundational groundwork for how we access geographically relevant data through search engines. Miura’s most influential contribution is the development of “Kokono Search,” a location-based search engine introduced in 2001. This system innovatively retrieves web documents based on the spatial distance between locations mentioned in the text and a user’s specified point, a concept now central to modern mapping and local search services. With 33 citations, this paper remains a key reference in the field. Earlier, Miura led the “Mobile Info Search” (MIS) project, which aimed to collect, structure, and integrate distributed local information from the Internet into a practical, location-aware format for mobile users. Though less cited, this 1998 work was visionary, anticipating the rise of context-aware computing and mobile information systems. Miura’s research directly addresses the challenge of making vast online data useful in real-world, location-specific contexts, marking him as an important early contributor to the evolution of geographic information retrieval and ubiquitous computing.
