About
Heikki Joensuu is a pioneering Finnish oncologist whose work has fundamentally shaped the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and advanced the field of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). His landmark research established imatinib as the standard first-line therapy for advanced GIST, dramatically improving patient outcomes, and he led the pivotal clinical trials defining adjuvant treatment protocols that prevent recurrence after surgery. With over 600 published papers and more than 50,000 citations, Joensuu’s contributions have saved countless lives worldwide. Beyond GIST, he spearheaded Finland’s BNCT program, treating 249 patients at Helsinki University Hospital using reactor-based neutron sources and L-BPA-F, and later championed the transition to more accessible proton accelerator-based BNCT systems. His work has earned him international recognition, including the prestigious European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Award. For students and researchers, Joensuu exemplifies how translational research—from bench to bedside—can revolutionize cancer care, blending rigorous science with compassionate clinical practice.
