About

Gustavo Santo Pedro Pamplona investigates the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying body ownership and vicarious somatosensation—how we come to feel that a body is our own and experience sensations as if they were happening to someone else. His major contributions center on the rubber hand illusion (RHI), a classic multisensory paradigm, and its neural correlates. In his most cited work (2021, 22 citations), he demonstrated that illusory body ownership directly modulates cortical responses to vicarious touch, revealing a behavioral and neural link between self-other boundaries and empathy. More recently (2025), he has explored how manipulating visual inputs during the RHI alters functional connectivity in relevant brain networks, advancing understanding of the sensory integration processes that sustain the illusion. His research bridges fundamental questions in consciousness, multisensory perception, and social cognition, with implications for neurorehabilitation and virtual reality. By combining behavioral experiments with neuroimaging, Pamplona provides compelling evidence that our sense of embodiment is dynamically constructed through cross-modal interactions, offering a window into the plasticity of self-representation.
