About

Dr. Chunyang Chen is a leading cardiovascular surgeon whose research focuses on advancing coronary revascularization techniques, particularly through the optimization of internal thoracic artery (ITA) harvesting. His major contributions center on systematically evaluating and refining the methods for ITA preparation—the gold standard conduit for bypass surgery—to improve long-term patient outcomes. His highly cited 2021 systematic review (25 citations) comprehensively synthesized best practices for ITA harvesting and preparation, addressing a critical technical gap in the field. Dr. Chen further demonstrated clinical impact in a 2022 retrospective cohort study (12 citations), which provided compelling evidence that minimally invasive left internal mammary artery (LIMA) harvesting techniques are both safe and effective, even during the surgeon’s learning curve, achieving results comparable to conventional open approaches. This work is pivotal for promoting less invasive cardiac surgery without compromising safety. By rigorously validating these advanced techniques, Dr. Chen’s research directly supports the broader adoption of minimally invasive revascularization, ultimately aiming to reduce patient trauma and recovery time while maintaining the highest standard of graft patency.
