Abstract
Abstract Confined space entry in FPSO tanks poses significant hazards, including high temperatures, height-related risks, complex structures, and gas exposure risks. Robotic technologies, such as drones and crawlers, have reduced the need for human presence in these dangerous environments. This paper explores the current capabilities and challenges of utilizing robotics in FPSO tank inspections and outlines a roadmap for future advancements. Key insights are drawn from recent offshore campaigns, controlled environment tests, industry conferences, expert discussions, and operational consultations. Collaborative workshops with classification societies and marine integrity teams have also been conducted to inform the findings. The study identifies evolving inspection requirements set by asset owners and operators, examines the impact of technological advancements on future class requirements, and proposes interim solutions to address current challenges. A comprehensive technology development roadmap is presented, aiming to improve inspection efficiency, enhance safety, support asset integrity management, and ensure regulatory compliance. This paper aims to bridge the knowledge gap by sharing lessons learned from the application of novel robotic technologies in hazardous environments.
